ORGANIST & CHOIR TRAINER
A musician of skill, flair and imagination
is required as soon as possible
We are seeking to appoint an Organist and Choir Trainer who has the enthusiasm and ability to maintain and enhance a musical tradition established over many years.
We are looking for a musician to play for Sunday Services, Major Festivals, committed to training and expanding an adult choir and to help lead the congregation in worship.
The organ is a 3 manual Nicholson of Worcester (1898 / 1908) with some 1980’s work. It is of good quality.
Duties to include
- In consultation with the incumbent to draw up the monthly music list.
- Sunday services
10.30 am Sung Eucharist, Common Worship Order 1, each week
4.00 pm or 6.00 pm Sunday afternoon or evening services… about 10 per year.
- Weekday Services, Major Festivals… about 10 per year.
- Choir Practice is on a Friday 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm with a break in August.
- The Choir Library has a comprehensive collection of music and needs to be maintained in a good condition. There is a budget for new music.
- The organist is responsible for liaising with the organ tuner.
The Musical Tradition
There is scope here for development and encouragement will be given by the Rector and congregation who appreciate this aspect of the church’s life.
- Hymns are taken from “Hymns Old & New” published by Kevin Mayhew 1996.
We are familiar with and use approximately 300 hymns from this 571 hymn collection.
At the organist’s discretion tunes are occasionally taken from AMR when the pitch or harmony is considered better.

A Unison Communion by Herbert Sumsion… in current use.

The Wiltshire Service by Richard Shephard
- Anthems… a repertoire of about…
24 for general use including Lent and Easter
12 for use at Christmas
The choir learns new music quickly.
An anthem is sung most weeks.
Choir attendance each week is in the 90% range. Members are keen and committed.
Terms and Conditions
Remuneration to be negotiated.
Salary between £2,500 and £3,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications.
To be reviewed annually.
- Wedding Fees presently £84… 15 weddings in 2009.
- Funeral Fees presently £54… 40 funerals in 2009.
- Holidays... 6 Sundays per year with locum being paid by Church Council.
- CRB check… upon appointment disclosure at enhanced level required.
- Contract… The Church Council would expect to be able to draw up a mutually acceptable agreement based on the R.C.M. model.
